Valine’s academic and activist work has centered around environmental and human rights, Indigenous title, and defending her homelands from oil and gas supertankers. She worked as the research writer for her government, the Council of the Haida Nation, for three years before moving into the non-profit world where she spent her time doing research and community outreach related to liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects proposed in Northern BC.
In 2011, Valine helped resurrect Haida Gwaii CoASt (Communities Against Supertankers), a grassroots organization with the mandate to protect the Islands from supertankers. She has sat on the Steering Committee for the Friends of Wild Salmon since 2012 and served on the board of directors for the Haida Gwaii Museum from 2013 to 2016. Valine recently co-founded a non-profit located on Haida Gwaii to help facilitate a swift shift to clean energy. She understands the power of her community and believes that an elegant transition to small scale renewable energy is absolutely necessary.
Valine does her strategizing on the beach and finds her inspiration in the forest.
