Tell the B.C. Government we need climate action now!
Fourteen of the fifteen hottest years ever recorded have happened since the year 2000.
At the same time, we need to shift to renewable, climate-friendly energy sources. This will create more jobs and support local economies better than fossil fuels.
Solar, wind, tidal, geothermal: the renewable alternatives are no longer dreams for our future. The future is here—and all we have to do is make it happen.
A “climate test” will test proposed energy projects against their impact on our climate. This will involve consideration of the proposals’ emissions, from extraction to transportation to eventual consumption, and whether there are more climate-friendly alternatives. If a proposal doesn’t meet the test, it doesn’t go ahead.
That will require boldness and leadership from our provincial government.
We must take back control of decision-making about energy projects in B.C.
We must apply a rigorous climate test to all energy infrastructure proposals.
And we must adopt policies that build a climate-friendly economy and help communities adapt to climate change.
Please sign this petition and share it with your friends. Let’s make this happen.
To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:
WHEREAS climate change is already impacting BC families;
WHEREAS science has shown that the vast majority of fossil fuel reserves must remain in the ground if we are to keep global temperature increases within 2° Celsius.
WHEREAS studies demonstrate that renewable energy and climate-friendly economic activities create more jobs than large-scale fossil fuel projects, while increasing community resilience and fostering a healthy environment;
WHEREAS the National Energy Board pipeline reviews drastically limit public participation and don’t consider climate-related impacts;
Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House take the following actions:
- Withdraw from the federal review of the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline and initiate a B.C. environmental assessment that considers climate impacts and puts the decision in the hands of British Columbians.
- Mandate a scientifically rigorous climate test be applied to any energy infrastructure project undergoing an environmental assessment under British Columbia’s jurisdiction.
- Enact policies that help shift BC communities away from fossil fuel dependence towards a healthy, resilient, secure and sustainable low-carbon economy.
