Sierra Club BC Associate Director and Campaigns Director Shelley Luce offers the following statement:
“For decades, British Columbians have said no to oil spills, and the job losses, financial devastation, and damaged ecosystems that come with them. In 2019, Parliament made it illegal to ship oil off this coast, and we plan to keep it that way.
“A northern oil pipeline would put the waters protected by the North Coast Oil Tanker Ban at risk. The region includes critical habitats in Dixon Entrance, Hecate Strait, and Queen Charlotte Sound, which are vital for endangered species like humpback whales, salmon and orcas.
“We shouldn’t have to trade biodiversity, clean water and healthy beaches for pollution. Instead, our federal and provincial governments should be investing in clean energy—solar, wind, a national electricity grid that cuts bills and creates jobs. We expect our leaders to protect the climate, our future and our coast.”
