Sierra Club BC reaction to Ksi Lisims environmental assessment approval
September 16, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sierra Club BC Associate Director and Campaigns Director Shelley Luce offers the following statement:
“After approving the Ksi Lisims environmental assessment, it is more important than ever for the B.C. government to strengthen its CleanBC plan to ensure all sectors, including oil and gas, get as close as possible to achieving their legislated targets. This requires implementing the oil and gas emissions cap as soon as possible, meeting methane pollution reduction goals, tightening the carbon price for all industries, and redirecting fossil fuel subsidies to climate solutions.
“LNG is worse than coal. Fracking for gas in ‘sacrifice zones’ is causing serious medical conditions (cancers, preterm births) as well as polluting enormous amounts of fresh water. Burning LNG anywhere in the world heats up the planet and makes droughts and forest fires worse. These worsening climate disasters are already costing the BC government billions of dollars and will outweigh any profits from fossil fuels.
“The province has opened the door to climate breakdown with this permit – but it is not too late to close that door again if Premier Eby’s government implements the guardrails it promised, sending a message to investors that haven’t made final decisions.”
