FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sierra Club BC Director of Campaigns and Programs Shelley Luce offers the following statement in reaction to the federal election results:
“Yesterday’s election result gives us hope for ongoing climate and conservation commitments like protecting 30 percent of lands and waters across Canada by 2030 and reducing emissions to net-zero by 2050.
“But support and action from the B.C. government will be critical to wind down fossil fuel pollution, protect endangered ecosystems like old-growth forests, and enable Indigenous-led conservation solutions.
“In this election the vision we have for Canada was at stake, and voters showed just how highly they value leadership that can address more than one crisis at once – from the tariff war to threats to our sovereignty to climate change to affordability challenges and the unprecedented loss of biodiversity our country is facing. It is clear the majority of this country wants to protect the people and places we love, advance reconciliation and build a healthier future for the next generation.
“The votes are in. Now we have lots of work to do to make sure this result translates to progress on files like the Nature Agreement, which has a stated goal of working with First Nations to permanently protect up to 1.3 million hectares of at-risk old-growth forests by 2025. As well as our climate commitments, which become more unattainable with every new oil and gas project that is greenlit.
“We are committed to continue working on these issues, with a focus on protecting ecosystems, championing renewable energy, and reducing the climate pollution that is fueling heat waves, flooding, wildfires and other climate impacts that threaten communities across B.C. and Canada.”
