FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yesterday, the B.C. government approved another major piece of new fossil fuel infrastructure, the Tilbury Marine Jetty Project. And today, the province announced it will finalize an oil and gas emissions cap in 2025 and implement it in 2026. Sierra Club BC is extremely concerned about both developments.
We understand that the provincial government is facing both uncertainty about the future of the federal oil and gas emissions cap and a wave of politically irresponsible attacks against climate policies like the carbon tax.
But the escalating climate crisis impacts around the world make it crystal clear: delaying effective climate policy, while approving new fossil fuel projects that lock in even more climate pollution for decades, will result in climate breakdown.
If provincial and federal governments are unable to finalize the oil and gas emissions caps they promised in a timely manner, they need to introduce a temporary pause for all new fossil fuel projects like the Biden administration in the US did for new LNG projects. Without such a step, it will become all but certain that B.C. and Canada will continue to fail to meet their climate target.
