The 2023 wildfire season was the most destructive in British Columbia’s recorded history. Fueled by climate change, close to three million hectares of forests burned, tens of thousands of people were forced to evacuate, and hundreds of homes were lost or damaged. In 2024, the community of Jasper, Alberta, and much of the forests surrounding it were severely damaged by fire. And the devastating floods B.C. experienced in 2021 due to an atmospheric river are now estimated to be the most expensive natural disaster in the province’s history. These heartbreaking trends threaten our homes, our finances, our crops, and the health and safety of our communities.
Enough is enough. Our provincial government needs to take the climate crisis seriously if they intend to keep communities and the places we love safe.
We need to address the root of the problem, not just respond to disasters as they appear. That means reducing the climate pollution that is causing extreme atmospheric rivers, droughts, heatwaves and wildfires by winding down the production and burning of fossil fuels.
But right now, B.C. is doing the opposite. The province is rapidly expanding fossil fuel projects like LNG terminals, pipelines and other fracked gas infrastructure. This will increase pollution in B.C. and abroad, making unnatural disasters more frequent and severe.
It’s not too late to turn things around. With leadership and additional climate action, it is possible to meet our pollution reduction targets and move toward a clean energy economy.
Will you call for winding down fossil fuel production in B.C. and investing more in clean energy? Preventing wildfires, droughts, floods and heatwaves will require real commitment to reduce dangerous, climate warming pollution. Getting on this path will save lives, and protect our health, finances, infrastructure and the web of life we all depend on.
For the people and places we love, join the thousands speaking up. We encourage you to personalize your letter so that your message goes even farther.
