Our Work
Empowering Local Leaders
You are needed. Together, we can build a brighter future.
Ushering in the wide-scale action needed to address ecological harm requires us all. Everyone has a gift they can share to build a brighter future — whether you’re an accountant, hiker, faith leader or artist. You are needed just as you are.
Protecting the lands and waters can feel overwhelming, and many concerned folks don’t know how or where to begin. That’s where Sierra Club BC comes in. We are here to support you.
We’re here to support you.
We recognize that many people are hungry to do more than sign another petition. That’s why we’ve developed a suite of accessible resources and inspiring programs to help people go deeper.
Here are a few ways we empower local leaders:
- Run in-depth programs like our Move the Dial at City Council Program and Mother Tree Local Leaders Program for those who may be new to the environmental movement.
- Provide a diverse set of trainings and resources to help people make a big impact in ways authentic to them.
- Hold hundreds of conversations with concerned community members — whether they’re looking to protect a neighbourhood tree from being destroyed, struggling to get news coverage on a fossil fuel expansion project they’re fighting, or wanting to use their art to create positive change. Our team listens and responds with avenues of support for how they can tackle their community’s issue head on.

Here’s what our growing network of local leaders has accomplished
We’ve supported hundreds of people working to restore ecosystems and move the needle on climate policy. There’s no limit to the creative solutions they’ve dreamed up! Some accomplishments of our network include:
- Started local conservation groups to protect at-risk ecosystems in their community
- Fundraised to support new Indigenous-led conservation areas
- Worked with biologists to identify at-risk species in proposed logging cutblocks to trigger formal protections
- Persuaded 14 different municipalities to pass pro-biodiversity resolutions at city council
- Created nature-focused sermons and workshops to engage and mobilize their faith communities
- Published environmental stories in local, provincial and national media outlets
- Created pollinator gardens in neighborhoods and hosted workshops to bring others into the movement
- And much more!
