Leave a legacy
Invest in a brighter future
Leaving a gift in your will to Sierra Club BC is the easiest way to leave a legacy of healthy land and water for future generations to enjoy for many years to come.
With over 55 years of experience, Sierra Club BC is known for safeguarding biodiversity, protecting old-growth forests, advocating for meaningful climate action and inspiring future generations to care for the lands and water through our place-based environmental education programs.
Your legacy gift, no matter the size, will make a tremendous difference in ensuring we can continue working to restore abundant ecosystems by helping people reconnect with the land, share knowledge and advocate for the environment.
Ways to include Sierra Club BC in your estate plans
Gift in your will
A bequest is the money or property you legally leave in your will. A bequest will often reduce taxes on your estate and may eliminate the taxable impact on your beneficiaries. You can name a specific dollar amount, residual amount or a piece of property, such as a home or securities.
The most common types of bequests are:
- Residual bequest: Sierra Club of BC Foundation receives a portion of the remainder of your estate after other specific gifts have been made.
- Specific bequest: Sierra Club of BC Foundation receives a specific dollar amount or stated fraction of your estate.
- Contingent bequest: Sierra Club of BC Foundation receives a stated share of your estate, but only in the event of the prior death of other named beneficiaries.
- Trust remainder bequest: Named beneficiaries receive income from a trust established in the will. Upon death of the surviving beneficiaries, or at the end of the specified term, all or part of the remaining principal will pass to Sierra Club of BC Foundation.

Frequently asked questions
Can you help me write a will?
We can’t help you write your will or provide legal or tax advice. Please consult a professional expert who can offer legal advice based on your financial and philanthropic goals.
Do I have to tell you I’ve included you in my will?
We’d love to hear from you if you make a legacy commitment, but you’re not obligated to tell us. Knowing about planned gifts helps us plan for the future and recognize your generosity.
Some donors send us basic details, others include a photocopy of the portion of their wills that include us. Anything you share is strictly confidential and non-binding — you can always change your mind.
What will you do with my gift?
Your legacy gift will fund advocacy work grounded in evidence to protect at-risk ecosystems, safeguard biodiversity and ensure a healthy climate. All legacy gifts are accepted as general funds for immediate use.
