Reciprocal relationships
Beyond their role as insect predators, they host entire mini ecosystems inside their pitchers, where certain insects and microorganisms live and recycle nutrients. This makes them not only predators but also ecosystem engineers in wetland environments.
These plants, as with many bog plant species, are at risk from climate-change-induced rising temperatures, drying out the ecosystem. Additionally, many wetlands, like bogs, are sites for agricultural development, limiting the range these pitcher plants can survive.
