Not many organisms eat sphagnum moss. However, many insects will eat the microorganisms living around the sphagnum. This moss also provides a great place for nesting and bedding for birds.
Sphagnum has been used by the Musqueam people for its medicinal value. The moss is water-absorbent, acidic, and antiseptic, and therefore can be used to treat wounds for infection.
