Call for a provincial law to protect biodiversity and ecosystems!
Last year, the B.C. government developed a draft Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health Framework that received thousands of supportive comments and input from people across the province. The draft outlines a path forward — including interim protection while a provincial law co-developed with Indigenous Nations that prioritizes biodiversity and ecosystem health is developed.
The B.C. government committed to release a final implementation plan in 2024. It is now delayed. This means that despite having over 1,900 species and ecosystems on the brink, B.C. remains without a provincial law to meaningfully protect endangered species or their habitats.
British Columbia is the most biodiverse province in Canada and home to the most species at risk of extinction. From breathtaking wild salmon to mighty woodland caribou herds to towering old-growth forests, these spectacular beings and ecosystems are at risk of being lost forever if we don’t take action now.
We can’t allow the provincial government to back away from this commitment. We need a meaningful law to resolve the legal and regulatory gaps that have allowed thousands of species and many ecosystems to become endangered.
The B.C. government has a clear mandate from British Columbians to share a final framework and implementation plan to protect biodiversity and ecosystem health. Send a message to your MLA and key Ministers today to make sure this happens! We encourage you to personalize your email for extra impact.
