Wildfires, drought, floods and extreme heat are putting our communities in danger and costing taxpayers billions.
Now the federal government and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are pushing to fast-track another oil pipeline through southern B.C.—backed by billions in public money. This pipeline’s pollution will continue to overheat our planet, putting the safety of our families at even greater risk. The additional oil tanker traffic would also bring more underwater noise and the threat of a devastating oil spill to the Salish Sea, bringing endangered Southern Resident Orcas even closer to extinction.

Why don’t we hear that connection more often?
Part of the answer may be surprisingly simple: a lot of people who care about climate change aren’t talking about it. This makes them feel alone in their worry, when the reality is most of us are deeply concerned.
Research in Canada has found a striking gap between what people believe and what they think their neighbors believe. Canadians estimated that only 46% of their fellow citizens saw climate change as a threat requiring urgent action. In reality, 75% did.
It needs to be said loud and clear—the pipeline to B.C.’s South Coast and all new fossil fuel infrastructure further contribute to the worsening climate impacts our communities are facing.
And to make matters worse, having most of the funding for this pipeline come from our taxes means everyday families are the ones taking on the risk, while much of the financial benefit would flow to an oil industry whose investors include major U.S. and other global interests.
Oil companies can finance their own projects. Public money should work for the public.
We have a better choice. Instead of making taxpayers pay for another oil pipeline, we can invest in affordable renewable energy that creates lasting jobs, lowers energy costs and protects the people and places we love.
That means good jobs that last. Lower energy costs. Healthier communities. A safer climate. And a Salish Sea where Southern Resident Orcas can thrive.
We need to come together to oppose a new oil pipeline to B.C.’s South Coast and demand that public money be invested in a cleaner, safer and more affordable future.
