Communities across so-called Canada/Kanata are grieving after the discovery of over five thousand unmarked graves of children at multiple sites of former Indian Residential Schools. Cowessess First Nation Chief Cadmus Delorme recently stated on The National, “we’re asking that you stand beside us.”
Today, Sierra Club BC is asking our friends and supporters to engage with several resources. Among them, the findings and calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, testimonials by survivors, the final report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, information on ‘Indian Hospitals’, a list of current and recent news coverage on Residential Schools, donation links, a list of resources SCBC complied for Indigenous Peoples Day, and an invitation from Sierra Club BC Cultural Voice kQwa’st’not.
This list might seem extensive, but our hope in sharing these resources and invitations is that our friends and supporters will be able to take a moment to pause and reflect, but more importantly, as Delorme said to the CBC, “bring this into your personal life, your social life, your business life… if we can all own those a little bit in this country, in one generation we could overcome so many challenges today that our next generation won’t inherit.”
Thank you for engaging with this list of resources. This is an important first step that we hope you will take with us.
